True-color corrected reflectance image of Hurricane Dora southeast of the Hawaiian Islands on August 6, 2023. This image was acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 satellite. The Hawaiian islands are at the center of this image (covered by clouds) and Hurricane Dora is southeast of the islands. The combination of the hurricane south of the islands and high pressure north of the islands resulted in a large pressure difference that led to gusty winds over the islands. These winds fueled wildfires on Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Visit Worldview to see an animation of Hurricane Dora and the Hawaiian Islands. When viewing the animation, note the thick band of clouds north of the hurricane and how these clouds rapidly are swept across the Hawaiian Islands as the hurricane stays south.
