Operation IceBridge was an airborne campaign that surveyed the Arctic, Antarctica, and Alaska over a period of 10 years. IceBridge provided essential data on the height, depth, thickness, and flow of sea ice, glaciers, and ice sheets.

The NASA P-3B and DC-8 airborne laboratories house several sophisticated instruments for measuring snow depth, ice elevation and thickness, surface temperature, bed topography, and other characteristics of sea ice, ice sheets, and glaciers. Most of the data held by NASA's NSIDC are government-funded and in the public domain. NSIDC makes its data as widely available as possible and as quickly as possible. NSIDC follows best practices and adheres to ESDS Program requirements. NSIDC also contributes metadata to other portals and repositories, thereby increasing the avenues by which users can find data. NSIDC strongly prefers to make data freely accessible to all. However, data providers may require specific terms and conditions.

As a condition of use, NASA's NSIDC requests that authors include a data citation in the reference section of their publication and/or other media to acknowledge those who have created the dataset. In addition, authors should cite the data product within the text of the publication to allow the data products to be discovered and re-used by others. Formal citations also make it easier for NASA to track the use and impact of these data, and helps the agency report data distribution activity to funding sources.

  • Bibliographic citations in the references section should include the following elements:
    • Author(s) or project name(s)
    • Date published
    • Title of data product
    • Version number
    • Bracketed description type (e.g., [Dataset]) - it's even better to list subset used, which would include spatial and temporal range
    • Repository name
    • DOI, persistent identifier, URL
    • Retrieved date (required when using URL) 
  • The data product's data citation, styled in a standard publication format, is provided on each dataset landing page and user guide. Authors can also contact NSIDC User Services if they need assistance with a citation format.

In addition to including a citation in the references section of a publication, authors also are requested to include the following sentence in the acknowledgement section of their publication: “All/Some data used in this study were acquired by NASA’s Operation IceBridge.”
