LANCE Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) data are on hold due to a GPS anomaly that started on November 2, 2024, at 5:15 p.m., EDT (22:15 UTC).
Given the GPS degradation, all production of Suomi NPP VIIRS land data products from MODAPS LANCE and LandSIPS are being suspended until further notice. Users are advised not to use any Suomi NPP VIIRS data products that have been produced and are being distributed since 5:15 p.m., EDT (22:15 UTC) on November 2, 2024, until further notice.
LANCE near real-time Suomi NPP Atmosphere data should be considered degraded due the GPS anomaly. Despite the GPS degradation, the Atmosphere SIPS science team opted to continue to produce the products as they have with all previous Suomi NPP GPS anomalies. However, users should be aware that these products are degraded.
A possible mitigation effort will start November 7, 2024, following which performance will be evaluated by the instrument Cal/Val teams, before any resumption of Suomi NPP near real-time and standard data processing at the leading edge. Further updates will be provided once all processing has been resumed for Suomi NPP from MODAPS LANCE and LandSIPS.
Update:
The Suomi-NPP onboard geolocation system was reset on November 5, 2024. Near real-time (NRT) data are available from November 9.
