The image above is a true-color corrected reflectance image showing three major fires burning close together east of Los Angeles, California, on September 10, 2024. The Bridge Fire is the northernmost of the three fires, the Line Fire is east/southeast of the Bridge Fire, and the Airport Fire is the fire to the south. The image was acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 satellite. Overlaid on the image are red dots representing the approximate location of detected fires and thermal anomalies. The image also shows the large plumes of smoke emanating from the three fires and moving roughly east/northeast.
The Bridge Fire began on September 8 and as of Friday, September 13, has burned almost 52,000 acres and is 3% contained. The Line Fire stared on September 5, has burned almost 38,000 acres and is 21% contained. The Airport Fire began on September 9, has burned 23,500 acres and is 8% contained. The area has been experiencing an intense heatwave with temperatures into the triple digits along with dry conditions.
