False-color corrected reflectance image of a volcano eruption at Sundhnúkur Crater Row, which is part of the Reykjanes Peninsula rift zone of Iceland near Reykjavik. The image was acquired June 5, 2024, by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. The most recent eruption began on May 29 and the volcano has remained active for the past seven days. This volcano has erupted for the fifth time since December 2023, as shown in a previous Worldview Image of the Week: Volcano Eruption Near Grindavik, Iceland.
Swipe the bar back and forth in the embedded map view above to see the fires and thermal anomalies layer pick up the heat signature from the lava, which is indicated as red dots.
