The HDF-EOS To GeoTIFF Conversion Tool (HEG) was developed to allow users to reformat, re-project, and perform stitching/mosaicing and subsetting operations on HDF-EOS objects. HEG presently works with HDF-EOS datasets from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard Aqua and Terra, Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER), Multi-Angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR), Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS), and Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer EOS (AMSR-E)

It also handles Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) HDF-EOS5 grid, Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) L3/L4 HDF5 datasets, Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) L2/L3 netCDF/HDF-EOS5 products staged at NASA's Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs), and some Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) binary products at the Land Processes DAAC (LP DAAC). It can also reformat and re-project some SMAP, VIIRS, and SRTM products.

The output GeoTIFF file is ingestible into commonly used Geographic Information Systems (GIS) applications. HEG will also write to HDF-EOS Grid and Swath formats (for example, for subsetting purposes) and native (or raw) binary.

Supported platforms include LINUX, WINDOWS, SUN (old versions of HEG), and MAC OSX (built on Darwin Kernel Version 16.7.0).
