Surface Radiation Budget

The NASA/Global Energy and Water Cycle Experiment (GEWEX) Surface Radiation Budget (SRB) Released 4-IP datasets that contain global 3-hourly, daily, monthly/3-hourly, and monthly averages of surface and top-of atmosphere (TOA) longwave and shortwave radiative flux parameters on a 1°x1° grid. Model inputs of cloud amounts and other atmospheric state parameters are also available in the ancillary data set.

Data Sources

The primary inputs to the models are visible and infrared radiances from International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) pixel-level (HXS) data along with cloud and surface properties derived from those data. NOAA/NCEI also provides ancillary files with the HXS data, of which temperature and moisture profiles and total column ozone were inputs to the SRB models.

Improvements in Release 4-IP

Release 4-IP products differ substantially from the previous SRB Release 3.0 arising from numerous improvements of the algorithms and input data sets. The Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document (ATBD) provided online details all changes applicable to Release 4-IP.

Temporal Coverage

  • Global shortwave fluxes: mid-1983 through mid-2017
  • Global longwave fluxes: 1988 through 2009
  • Additional land-only longwave coverage: mid-1983 through 1987
  • Additional ocean-only longwave coverage: 2010 through mid-2017
  • All fluxes are available in netCDF-4 format.
