Winds blowing smoke westward across Russia
Image captured on 21 July 2019, by the VIIRS instrument, aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi NPP satellite.
Image showing smoke from fires blowing westward across Russia. The true-color base image was acquired on 21 July 2019 by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument, aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi-National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. Overlaid in the true-color image are red dots indicating thermal anomalies. Strong winds are blowing smoke across the country and causing high levels of smoke and air pollution, evident in the aerosol index layer from Suomi-NPP/OMPS (Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite) instrument, in Siberian cities like Krasnoyarsk and Novosibirsk.
