Heavy rains and snow over Central Europe are shown in this true-color corrected reflectance image overlaid with IMERG Precipitation Rate from April 16, 2025. The true-color reflectance image is from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the Suomi National Polar orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) platform. The The IMERG Precipitation Rate layer displays rain rate and snow rate in millimeters per hour (mm/hr). It is estimated by the Integrated Multi-satellitE Retrievals for Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) (IMERG) algorithm. The IMERG algorithm uses passive-microwave observations from the GPM constellation of satellites, infrared observations from geosynchronous satellites, and calibration data derived from rain gauges.
Severe rains, shown in shades of orange to red, caused rivers to burst their banks in north-west Italy. While heavy snow to the Alps, shown in shades of blue, closed Alpine resorts and towns in France and Switzerland.
