This embedded map is comprised of two images showing high dust score values over Sardinia, Sicily, and southern Italy as detected on June 20, 2024. The "A" image is a true-color corrected reflectance image from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard NASA's Aqua satellite. The "B" image is an overlay of the Dust Score layer created from data acquired by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument also aboard the Aqua satellite.
Move the slider in the lower center of the image back and forth to see how the brown dust in the true-color "A" image corresponds to the high Dust Score in the "B" image.
The Dust Score is determined from multiple tests that compare radiances in select AIRS spectral channels. Radiances measured in channels that are sensitive to dust are compared to radiances measured in channels that are not sensitive to dust. The differences between several pairs of channels are represented as a Dust Score. Higher scores (indicated in colors of orange, red, and dark red) indicate more certainty that dust is present.
