Mountain Fire, Ventura County, California

Image captured on Nov 6, 2024, by the VIIRS instrument aboard the NOAA-20 platform.

The Mountain Fire began the morning of November 6, 2024, and is burning about 40 miles northwest of Los Angeles, CA. The fire has rapidly spread due to the Santa Ana winds and low humidity.

This comparison image is from November 6 and shows a false-color corrected reflectance image (Bands M11-I2-I1) on the left and a true-color corrected reflectance image overlaid with fires and thermal anomalies on the right. The images were acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 platform.

Move the center swipe bar to the right to see the actively burning fire in red with blueish smoke emanating from the fire. Move the bar to the left to view the fuller extent of the smoke blowing over the Channel Islands and the red dots indicating the approximate location of fire and thermal anomalies occurring within a 375m pixel.
