True-color corrected reflectance image of Lakes in Ethiopia, from left to right, Lakes Shalla/Shala, Abiata/Abijatta, and Langano on November 5, 2021. Lake Shalla is a deep alkaline lake, reaching depths of 250 meters, and some islands in the lake are important bird breeding sites, especially for the great white pelicans. Lake Abiata/Abijatta is a shallow alkaline lake and attracts flamingos. Lake Langano is brown in color due to high sulfur levels and other minerals. Various types of wildlife are found around the lake including ibex, monkeys, baboons, as well many varieties of bird.

This image was acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI), aboard the joint NASA/USGS Landsat 8 satellite. It is available in NASA's Worldview as a part of the Harmonized Landsat Sentinel-2 (HLS) project which provides 30 meter resolution true color surface reflectance imagery from the Operational Land Imager (OLI) instrument aboard Landsat 8, and the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) aboard the European Space Agency Sentinel-2A and -2B satellites. The data from the two instruments aboard the three satellites are processed through a set of algorithms to make the imagery consistent and comparable across the instruments. This includes atmospheric correction, cloud and cloud-shadow masking, spatial co-registration and common gridding, illumination and view angle normalization, and spectral bandpass adjustment.
