Fires Near Sydney, Australia
Night time image showing arcs of fire near Sydney, Australia, acquired on 6 December 2019 by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Instrument, aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. The image is from the Day/Night Band, Enhanced Near Constant Contrast layer which shows the earth’s surface and atmosphere using a sensor designed to capture low-light emission sources, under varying illumination conditions.
The image shows Sydney in the center of the image, brightly lit by city street lights and other anthropogenic sources. Visible to the north and the west of Sydney are arcs of light, these are wildfires burning outside of the city. Slide the bar back and forth in the comparison tool to see the VIIRS active fire points overlaid on the image.
