Fire Near Marathon, Greece

False-color reflectance image of burned areas near the Greek town of Marathon acquired on Aug 18, 2024.

This false-color image of a large burned area near the town of Marathon, Greece, was acquired on August 18, 2024. Green indicates healthy vegetation while reddish-brown colors indicate burned areas. The burned area covers approximately 10,413.8 hectares (25,733 acres). The fire is taking place in the Attica region of Greece, and began on August 11. High winds enabled the fire to quickly spread, leading to the evacuation of many towns and settlements. Click on the icon in the upper right corner to open this image in NASA Worldview.

This image was acquired by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) and OLI-2 instruments aboard the joint NASA-USGS Landsat 8 (OLI) and Landsat 9 (OLI-2) spacecraft and is from the Harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) project. HLS provides 30-meter resolution, true-color surface reflectance imagery from the OLI and OLI-2 instruments and from the Multi-Spectral Instrument (MSI) aboard the ESA (European Space Agency) Sentinel-2A and -2B satellites. The data from the four instruments are processed through a set of algorithms to make the imagery consistent and comparable. This processing includes atmospheric correction, cloud and cloud-shadow masking, spatial co-registration and common gridding, illumination and view angle normalization, and spectral bandpass adjustment.

The Reflectance imagery layer used in this image is a new imagery layer that is still undergoing beta testing. The layer can be customized to display any available Red-Green-Blue (R-G-B) band combination through a capability provided by NASA's Interagency Implementation and Advanced Concepts Team (IMPACT). This layer (B07-B05-B04) was dynamically selected via Worldview's layer options panel and is available in Worldview approximately 2 to 4 days after a satellite observation.
