The public, scientists, and wildland managers need timely and easy access to current wildfire information to keep people safe, understand the nature of fire, and effectively battle blazes. A training offered April 16-30, 2025, by NASA's Applied Remote Sensing Training (ARSET) program explores the powerful NASA data and tool users can quickly employ to identify the location, extent, and intensity of wildland fire activity and its effects.
The course, "Introduction to NASA Earth Observations and Tools for Wildfire Monitoring and Management," focuses on the multiple sources of time-sensitive satellite imagery and derived data products that can be found on the agency's Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) website. FIRMS features a dynamic mapping interface to visualize current and historical satellite imagery, active fire detections/hot spots, and related science data products. The application also provides multiple tools for users to access and ingest GIS-ready data.
The course is recommended for professionals involved in the identification, monitoring, and management of wildfires and their effects including federal, state agency, and local government representatives, members of non-governmental organizations, and researchers and other members of academia. The prerequisite for the course is the completion of the ARSET course Fundamentals of Remote Sensing. Please visit the course webpage for more information.
