Background
The Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) 2022 assessment found that several agencies would benefit from specialized remote sensing training focused on the specific satellite needs of their agency. This includes improved awareness and training on a number of topics, such as the types of available data, how to discover and access data in the cloud, what tools can be used, what products could be helpful, and how remote sensing can be incorporated into decision-making processes. Thematic topics may also be of interest and will be reviewed with agency partners, such as change detection following disasters and the sourcing of information for environmental resource management (e.g., structure conditions, burnt vegetation, flood/water levels, land subsidence).
Training development opportunities and collaborations with existing NASA initiatives are currently being discussed and explored.
Status: In Development
NASA’s SNWG Implementation TEam (NSITE) is actively meeting with select agencies to discuss their training and data needs. In response to initial discussions, NSITE curated and delivered a list of trainings to assist agencies’ in finding and using NASA data. Listening sessions are ongoing as the team works to understand what gaps still exist and to identify opportunities for targeted training. NSITE has also invited NASA’s Earthdata Geographic Information Systems Team (EGIST) to collaborate and help connect agencies with NASA’s geospatial data. As conversations continue, NSITE may identify opportunities to collaborate with NASA’s Applied Remote Sensing Training Program (ARSET) and other capacity-building programs to develop trainings targeted toward specific needs of agencies.
Societal Impact
Training helps ensure that NASA's wealth of available satellite Earth observations can be properly understood and applied to decision-making processes, thus increasing the use and impact of NASA data.
