Fires in Northern Portugal

Image captured on Sep 17, 2024, by the VIIRS instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 satellite.

False-color corrected reflectance (bands M11-I2-I1) image of wildfires in northern Portugal captured by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 satellite. Press the "Play" button in the lower left corner to view an animation of the spread of the fires between September 15 and September 19.

With the exception of devastating fires in locations like Greece and Portugal, Europe has generally been experiencing a milder 2024 fire season than in previous years in terms of burned area and detected thermal anomalies, according to metrics from the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS). This is in contrast to the 2023 fire season, which was one of the worst in the 21st century, according to the European Commission.
