Phytoplankton Bloom in Long Bay, Australia

Base image captured Jan 12, 2024, by the VIIRS instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi NPP satellite, overlaid with Chlorophyll a.

True-color corrected reflectance image of a phytoplankton bloom in Long Bay, Australia, on January 12, 2024, acquired by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. The true-color image is overlaid with Chlorophyll a, which provides the near-surface concentration of chlorophyll a in milligrams of chlorophyll pigment per cubic meter (mg/m3) in the ocean.

Swipe the bar back and forth in the embedded, comparison map above to view the brilliant turquoise phytoplankton visible in the true-color corrected reflectance image on the left and how it is reflected in the chlorophyll a layer on the right.
