The red dots in the embedded false-color corrected reflectance image above are thermal anomalies detected by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA NOAA-20 satellite on July 23, 2024, and indicate the approximate location of burning fires in the U.S. state of Oregon.
Press the "Play" button in the lower left corner of the image to watch an animation of the growth of the fires in the center of the map view from July 10 to July 23.
The fire that began on July 11 is the Cow Valley Fire, which is the southernmost fire; on July 18 the Durkee Fire becomes visible in the center; the Badland Complex Fire comes into view on July 23. The likely cause of these fires is lightning, but the fires have been exacerbated by erratic winds and dry vegetation.
