Sensing ozone from 1 Million Miles Away

This image shows the northern hemisphere ozone field from sunrise to sunset, and was created using the Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) aboard the DSCOVR satellite. EPIC creates images of the entire Earth disk at 1-1.6 hour intervals each day from a point approximately 1 million miles away.

Ozone in the Northern Hemisphere Spring

Yellow and dark red colors indicate areas of high ozone. During the northern hemisphere spring, these higher ozone values frequently originate at high northern latitudes and flow southward. The red spot in the center of the US represents an abnormally high value of ozone that occurs occasionally.
