Image of Hurricane Fred off the coast of West Africa. Hurricane Fred is the easternmost hurricane to form in the tropical Atlantic Ocean since the beginning of the satellite record in the early 1960s. The Cabo Verde/Cape Verde islands are experiencing their first huricane warning. The image is comprised of the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) corrected reflectance image as the background and is overlaid with the surface rain rate layer from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) instrument aboard the Global Change Observation Mission - Water "SHIZUKU" (GCOM-W) satellite. The rainbow color palette shows higher rain rates in white, reds and yellows, and lower rain rates in blues and purples.
