The animation above shows a series of true-color corrected reflectance images from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument aboard the Terra platform of Iceberg A23A moving toward South Georgia Island in Antarctica. Press the "Play" button in the lower left corner to view the animation spanning the dates December 14, 2024, to January 30, 2025.
A23A is currently the world's biggest iceberg with an area of approximately 3,000 square kilometers, which is about the size of Rhode Island, and is slowly moving toward South Georgia Island (Islas Georgias Del Sur). The iceberg, or megaberg, could collide with the island or get stuck in the shoals around it, or the ocean currents could guide the iceberg around the island.
