Image Caption

True-color corrected reflectance images of the Aral Sea in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan acquired 20 years apart, where November 30, 2001, is on the left and November 26, 2021, is on the right. These images were acquired by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradometer (MODIS), aboard NASA's Terra satellite. The Aral Sea began shrinking in the 1960's due to water being diverted for irrigation projects.
