Data recipes are tutorials or step-by-step instructions that have been developed by the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) staff or EOSDIS systems engineers to help users learn how to discover, access, subset, visualize and use our data, information, tools and services. These recipes cover many different data products across the Earth science disciplines and different processing languages/software.
|001||ASDC Data Recipes||
The Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC) Distributive Active Archive Center (DAAC) projects focus on the Earth science disciplines Radiation Budget, Clouds, Aerosols and Tropospheric Composition, and specializes in atmospheric data important to understanding the causes and processes of global climate change and the consequences of human activities on the climate. The ASDC offers Direct Data Download (DDD) access, and enhanced search and subsetting capabilities for many CALIPSO, CERES, MISR, MOPITT and TES products. Project tutorials, StoryMaps and Jupyter Notebooks are available for helping users learn to navigate product information and tools for working with the data.
|002||ASF DAAC Data Recipes||
The NASA Alaska Satellite Facility (ASF) DAAC specializes in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collection, processing, archiving, and distribution. These data are or were acquired by SAR sensors on many different space and airborne platforms, including: European Space Agency (ESA) Sentinel-1 constellation and European Remote Sensing satellites (ERS-1 and ERS-2); Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Japanese Earth Resources Satellite (JERS-1) and Advanced Land Observing Satellite (ALOS); Canadian Space Agency (CSA) RADARSAT-1 satellite, and NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) satellite, Airborne SAR (AIRSAR), Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle SAR (UAVSAR), Seasat, and the upcoming NISAR satellite mission. The ASF DAAC archive provides SAR data to download at no cost and, for most datasets, without restriction using the Vertex Data Search portal and ASF API. Data recipes and tools created by ASF staff and scientists that demonstrate many of the ways SAR data can be processed and used for Earth observation are available on the ASF website.
|003||CDDIS Data Recipes||
NASA's Crustal Dynamics Data Information System (CDDIS) is NASA’s data archive and information service supporting the international space geodesy community. CDDIS serves as one of the core components for the geometric services established under the International Association of Geodesy (IAG), an organization that promotes scientific cooperation and research in geodesy on a global scale. CDDIS provides continuous, long term, public access to the data and derived products from a global network of observing stations equipped with one or more of the following measurement techniques: Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Satellite Laser Ranging (SLR), Lunar Laser Ranging (LLR), Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI), and Doppler Orbitography and Radio-positioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS). CDDIS also provides products derived from these data required for a variety of science observations, including the determination of a global terrestrial reference frame and geodetic studies in plate tectonics, earthquake displacements, volcano monitoring, Earth orientation, and atmospheric angular momentum, among others.
|004||GES DISC Data Recipes||The NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) archives NASA satellite and model data related to atmospheric chemistry, atmospheric dynamics, precipitation, hydrology, solar irradiance, weather, and climate. The GES DISC’s “How-To” document library provides instructions on downloading and importing data into analytical software packages, the use of GES DISC visualization and analysis tools, analyzing GES DISC data with other available tools, and data format conversion procedures. The mission of the Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) DAAC is to provide a comprehensive active archive of both data and knowledge augmentation services with a focus on hazardous weather, its governing dynamical and physical processes, and associated applications. Within this broad mandate, GHRC focuses on lightning, tropical cyclones and storm-induced hazards through integrated collections of satellite, airborne, and in-situ data sets. HyDRO 2.0, a data search tool, is provided to help users locate and obtain GHRC data. Tutorials or step-by-step instructions have been developed by GHRC staff to help you learn to discover, visualize and use new data, information, software and techniques. These recipes cover a variety of datasets and processing languages/software.

The Level-1 and Atmosphere Archive & Distribution System (LAADS) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC), serves the global NASA Terra and Aqua Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) , and Suomi NPP (SNPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) science and applications communities through efficient access to science data products, services, tools, and all related resources. The "LAADS Web Tutorials" describes the process-flows involved in searching for, accessing, and acquiring MODIS, VIIRS, and other publicly available data products from the LAADS Web. It describes how users may accomplish these tasks through three different processes.
|007||LP DAAC Data Recipes||NASA’s Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) archives and distributes land data products derived from sensors aboard Earth observing satellites, the International Space Station (ISS), space shuttles, and other remote sensing platforms. In addition to data management responsibilities, the LP DAAC produces a diverse collection of high-quality E-Learning resources including informational videos, workshop materials, and data tutorials and scripts written in Python and R. The Ocean Biology Distributed Active Archive Center (OB.DAAC) is responsible for archiving satellite ocean biology data produced or collected under EOSDIS. Holdings include data from a mixture of historical and current missions, as well as from both NASA and partner space organizations. There are many methods to retrieve data, which are described on our data discovery page. The NASA OceanColor YouTube channel provides a host of webinars introducing users to the range of offerings within the OBPG, as well as tutorial videos demonstrating how to perform common tasks using our in-house data analysis software. Additionally, the OceanColor Forum is available describing solutions to a large number of questions submitted by the scientific community.
