Vegetation

NDVI images produced from LANCE data are used to monitor vegetation and crop condition. USDA FAS crop forecasters routinely vegetation indices produced by the Global Agricultural Monitoring project using data from LANCE to better predict crop yields. Groups such as FAO Desert Locust Information Service flag anomalies in vegetation.

Potentially useful data sets: MODIS Corrected Reflectance True Color, Land Surface Reflectance Bands 1-2-1, MODIS Snow Cover, LST (day and night).

Agro-climatic monitoring programs and global food security risks can be monitored using NRT MODIS data. There are several existing global/regional scale systems in place including a Famine Early Warning System (FEWS NET) which reports on drought and food shortages on a daily basis.
