EOSDIS New Datasets: April 2018
NASA's Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) has recently published two Global Precipitation Measurement Ground Validation (GPM-GV) Hydro-Estimator datasets, one from the GPM-GV Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) field campaign and the other from the GPM-GV Iowa Flood Studied (IFloodS) field campaign. Both of these datasets contain rainfall rate estimates derived using NOAA’s Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) infrared (IR) brightness temperature data. The Hydro-Estimator model was developed by researchers at the NOAA Center of Satellite Applications and Research (STAR). Rainfall rate estimates are produced every 15 minutes throughout the continental United States. Both of these datasets have been spatially subset to the specific field campaign region in support of GPM-GV. For IPHEx, the data cover North Carolina and mountainous portions of nearby states. For IFloodS, the data have been subset to the state of Iowa and surrounding region. These data are available in netCDF-4 format and consists of rain rate values during May 1, 2014 through June 16, 2014 (IPHEx) and April 25, 2013 through June 30, 2013 (IFloodS).

GHRC DAAC has obtained collection level digital object identifiers (DOIs) for each of the GPM-GV field campaigns. Each DOI resolves to field campaign landing page that contains an introduction to the purpose, location, and time of the field campaign, the collection citation, general characteristics, member dataset links, and primary documentation relevant to the field campaign. We are currently adding the Field Campaign Collection DOI to metadata for every data product published as part of the campaign. The landing pages are:

NASA's Land Processes DAAC (LP DAAC) has released the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Version 6 global Land/Water Mask (MOD44W) yearly (2000 - 2015) data product at 250 meter spatial resolution. A primary improvement in MOD44W Version 6 is the generation of time series data, rather than a simple static representation of water, given that water bodies fluctuate in size and location over time due to both natural and anthropogenic causes. The MOD44W Version 6 data product provides global coverage of land, water, no data, and an associated per pixel quality assurance (QA) layer that provides users with information on the determination of water.
LP DAAC has published additional years (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2016) for three Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (LSTE) Combined ASTER and MODIS Emissivity for Land (CAMEL) monthly data products. The CAMEL collection was derived by combining the University of Wisconsin-Madison MODIS Infrared Emissivity dataset (UWIREMIS) and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory ASTER Global Emissivity Dataset Version 4 (GEDv4). The data are fundamental for balancing the Earth's surface energy and radiation budget and can be used for monitoring land cover and land use change.
The Application for Extracting and Exploring Analysis Ready Samples (AρρEEARS), developed by LP DAAC, offers a simple and efficient way to subset Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) datasets using spatial, temporal, and layer parameters for both point and area samples. In addition, a step-by-step tutorial for accessing SMAP data in AppEEARS is available for the following five products:

LP DAAC recently released Version 2.7 of the AppEEARS. With this release, users now have access to the Terra MODIS Version 6 Land/Water Mask data product.
NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) published Version 2 of the dataset MEaSUREs MODIS Mosaic of Greenland (MOG) 2005, 2010, and 2015 Image Maps. Version 2 includes MOG2010 and MOG2015 data, in addition to the MOG2005 data. This dataset is funded by MEaSUREs.
NSIDC DAAC published January 2018 data for the dataset MEaSUREs Greenland Image Mosaics from Sentinel-1A and 1B, Version 2.
NSIDC DAAC has published Version 2 of the dataset Near-Real-Time Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) The Special Sensor Microwave Imager (SSM/I) and the Special Sensor Microwave Imager Sounder (SSMIS) Pathfinder Daily EASE-Grid Brightness Temperatures. The change from Version 1 to Version 2 represents a change in the data source for SSMIS processing from the DMSP-F17 satellite to the DMSP-F18 satellite.

NSIDC DAAC has published the dataset CryoSat-2 Level-1B Waveforms, Sea Ice Elevation, and Surface Roughness. This NASA IceBridge-related dataset will be updated on an ongoing, daily basis.

NASA's Oak Ridge National Laboratory DAAC (ORNL DAAC) published the Vegetation Collection dataset Landsat-derived Spring and Autumn Phenology, Eastern US - Canadian Forests, 1984-2013. This dataset provides Landsat phenology algorithm (LPA) derived start and end of growing seasons at 500-m resolution for deciduous and mixed forest areas of 75 selected Landsat sidelap regions across the Eastern United States and Canada. The data are a 30-year time series (1984-2013) of derived spring and autumn phenology for forested areas of the Eastern Temperate Forest, Northern Forest, and Taiga ecoregions.
ORNL DAAC published the Vegetation Collection dataset Hyperspectral Imagery from Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) for Sites in Idaho and California, USA, 2014 and 2015. This dataset provides surface reflectance measured by the AVIRIS-NG instrument during flights over research sites in Idaho and California in 2014 and 2015. AVIRIS-NG measures reflected radiance at 5-nanometer (nm) intervals in the visible to shortwave infrared spectral range between 380 and 2510 nm. Measurements are radiometrically and geometrically calibrated and provided at 1-meter spatial resolution. The data include 72 flight lines covering long-term research sites in the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed in southwestern Idaho and Hollister in southeastern Idaho. Several flight lines from a site in the Inyo National Forest near Big Pine, California are included.
ORNL DAAC published the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) dataset High-Resolution Shrub Biomass and Uncertainty Maps, Toolik Lake Area, Alaska, 2013. This dataset contains estimates for aboveground shrub biomass and uncertainty at high spatial resolution (0.80-m) across three research areas near Toolik Lake, Alaska. The estimates for August of 2013 were generated and mapped using Random Forest modeling with input variables of optimized lidar-derived canopy volume and height, mean NDVI from 4-band RGB color and near-IR orthophotographs, and harvested biomass data. Shrub biomass was harvested at Toolik Lake in 2014 and used to optimize inputs and validate the final model and these biomass data are also provided.
ORNL DAAC published the Carbon in Arctic Reservoirs Vulnerability Experiment (CARVE) dataset: Ecosystem Scale CH4 Emission Derived from Aircraft Observations 2012-2014. This dataset provides methane flux estimates derived from airborne measurements collected over Alaska and the western Yukon Territory during the CARVE between 2012 and 2014. The state-scale methane fluxes were calculated using a combination of atmospheric profiles and lagrangian transport modeling.
ORNL DAAC published the North American Carbon Program (NACP) revised dataset MODIS-derived Vegetation and Albedo Parameters for Agroecosystem-Climate Modeling. This dataset provides MODIS-derived leaf area index (LAI), stem area index (SAI), vegetation area fraction, dominant landcover category, and albedo parameters for the Continental US (CONUS), parts of southern Canada, and Mexico at 30 km resolution. The data cover the period 2003-2010 and were developed to be used as surface input data for regional agroecosystem-climate models. MODIS Collection 5 products used to derive these parameters included the Terra yearly water mask, vegetation continuous field products, the combined Terra and Aqua yearly land-cover category (LCC) (MCD12Q1), 8-day composites for LAI (MCD15A2), and albedo parameter (MCD43B1) products. Please note that the MODIS Version 5 land data products used in this dataset have been superseded by Version 6 data products.
ORNL DAAC published the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) dataset Thaw Depth at Selected Unburned and Burned Sites Across Alaska, 2016-2017. This dataset provides thaw depth measurements made at seven locations across Alaska, during August 2016 and June and September 2017. Three of the locations are paired unburned-burned sites. At each site, three 30-meter transects were established and thaw depth was measured at 1-meter increments along each transect using a 1.15 m T-shaped thaw depth probe. Locations were selected to investigate fire disturbance, to span the range of permafrost regions from continuous to sporadic, and to cover vegetation types from boreal forests, tussock tundra, upland willow/herbaceous scrub, and lowland fen and wet tundra sites across Alaska.
ORNL DAAC published the ABoVE dataset Dall Sheep Track Sinking Depths, Snow Depth, Hardness, and Density, 2017. This dataset contains Dall sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) hoof sinking depths in snow tracks, and snow depth, hardness, and density measurements in snow pits adjacent to the tracks. Snow measurements were collected between March 19-22, 2017 at sites on Jaeger Mesa in the Wrangell Mountains (WRST), Alaska. Estimated sheep age classes and track site coordinates are also provided.
ORNL DAAC published the Atmospheric Carbon and Transport-America (ACT-America) dataset L1 Meteorological and Aircraft Navigational Data. This dataset provides aircraft navigational parameters and related meteorological data (often referred to as "housekeeping" data) in support of the research activities for the two aircraft that flew for the ACT-America project. ACT-America's mission spans five years and includes five 6-week intensive field campaigns covering all 4 seasons and 3 regions of the central and eastern United States. Two instrumented aircraft platforms, NASA'S Langley Research Center Beechcraft B200 King Air and NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center C-130H Hercules, were used to collect high-quality in situ measurements across a variety of continental surfaces and atmospheric conditions. During these flights, aircraft positional, meteorological, and environmental data are recorded by a variety of instruments. For this dataset, measurements include, but are not limited to: latitude, longitude, altitude, ground speed, air temperature, and wind speed and direction. These data are incorporated into related ACT-America flight-instrumented datasets to provide geotrajectory file information for position, attitude, and altitude awareness of instrumented sampling.
ORNL DAAC published the revised Daymet dataset Daily Surface Weather Data on a 1-km Grid for North America, Version 3. This data set provides Daymet Version 3 model output data as gridded estimates of daily weather parameters for North America and Hawaii: including Canada, Mexico, the United States of America, Puerto Rico, and Bermuda. Daymet output variables include the following parameters: minimum temperature, maximum temperature, precipitation, shortwave radiation, vapor pressure, snow water equivalent, and day length. The dataset covers the period from January 1, 1980 to December 31 of the most recent full calendar year. Daymet variables are continuous surfaces provided as individual files, by variable and year, at a 1-km x 1-km spatial resolution and a daily temporal resolution. Data are in a Lambert Conformal Conic projection for North America and are distributed in a netCDF file (version 1.6) format compliant to Climate and Forecast (CF) metadata conventions.
ORNL DAAC published the revised Carbon Monitoring System (CMS) dataset CO2 Emissions from Fossil Fuels Combustion, ACES Inventory for Northeastern USA. This dataset provides estimates of annual and hourly carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the combustion of fossil fuels (FF) for 13 states across the Northeastern United States. The Anthropogenic Carbon Emissions System (ACES) was used to estimate annual FFCO2 emissions for nine different emissions source sectors on a 1 x 1 km spatial grid, for the year 2011. Hourly estimates of FFCO2 for the years 2013 and 2014 were derived from the 2011 annual emissions by holding the total emissions constant, but accounting for seasonal and daily variations in meteorology, fuel consumption, and traffic patterns across these two years.
NASA's Physical Oceanography DAAC (PO.DAAC) completed the public release and announcement of the Rapid Scatterometer (RapidScat) Level 2B Climate Version 2.0 dataset:
Footprints_V2.0. Prior to the release, PO.DAAC re-ingested all granules for the dataset after the data provider corrected the missing co-located Sea Surface Temperature (SST) data in the NetCDF files.
NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) completed a beta release of the Historical Urban Population, 3700 BC–2000 AD, developed by the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies. This is the first spatially explicit global dataset containing location and size of urban populations over the last 6,000 years. It was created by digitizing, transcribing, and geocoding historical, archaeological, and census-based urban population data. Each data point consists of a city name, latitude, longitude, year, population, and a reliability ranking to assess the geographic uncertainty of each data point. Despite spatial and temporal gaps, no other geocoded dataset exists with this level of detail. The dataset can be used to investigate long-term historical urbanization trends and patterns, evaluate the current era of urbanization, and build a richer record of urban population through history.
NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) completed a production release of the Global PM2.5 Grids from MODIS, Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR). and Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) with Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR), 1998-2016 dataset, consisting of annual concentrations (micrograms per cubic meter) of ground-level fine particulate matter (PM2.5), with dust and sea-salt removed.
This dataset supersedes a previous version with data through 2012.
SEDAC completed a production release of the India Village-Level Geospatial Socio-Economic Data Set: 1991, 2001, part of SEDAC’s India data collection. The dataset includes the finest level of administrative boundaries in India (village/town-level) with more than 200 socio-economic variables collected during the Indian Census in 1991 and 2001. The data are in UTM 44N projection and are distributed primarily as shapefiles. Separate files are provided for each of the 28 states (number of states during 1991 and 2001 census) and combined Union Territories for 1991 and 2001.
