About the ESDS Program
NASA's Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program is responsible for:
- Actively managing NASA’s Earth science data as a national asset
- Developing data system capabilities optimized to support rigorous science investigations and unique needs of multiple science disciplines
- Processing instrument data to create Earth System Data Records (ESDRs)
- Upholding NASA’s policy of free, full, and open sharing of all data, tools, and ancillary information for all users
- Engaging members of the Earth science community in the evolution of data systems
Alignment with NASA Strategic Plan
NASA established three Strategic Goals, each containing several objectives, in their most recent Strategic Plan (2014):
- Expand the frontiers of knowledge, capability, and opportunity in space;
- Advance understanding of Earth and develop technologies to improve the quality of life on our home planet;
- Serve the American public and accomplish our Mission by effectively managing our people, technical capabilities, and infrastructure.
NASA Headquarter's Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program consistently aligns with Goal 2 of NASA's Strategic Plan 2014, with particular devotion to Objective 2.2: "Advance knowledge of Earth as a system to meet the challenges of environmental change, and to improve life on our planet."
NASA's ESDS shape an interdisciplinary view of Earth, exploring the interaction among the atmosphere, oceans, ice sheets, land surface interior, and life itself, which enables scientists to measure global climate changes and to inform decisions by Government, organizations, and people in the United States and around the world.

NASA's ESDS Program sets the standard for the delivery of science-quality data related to planet Earth. We ensure the data are documented precisely and fully, and our data access services are useful and usable by a wide community of users.
