Fires in Bolivia on 24 August 2019 (Suomi-NPP/VIIRS)

This true-color image shows fires and smoke in Bolivia, acquired on 24 August 2019 by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument, aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. The satellite takes a ‘snapshot’ of events as it passes over the Earth. Each red dot overlaid on the base true-color image represents the center of a 375m pixel, indicating that one or several fires or thermal anomalies are occurring within that 375m pixel. Smoke emanating from the fires are also visible in this image. Learn more about Satellite Detections of Fire with this tutorial in Worldview.

Visit the Fire Information Resource Management System (FIRMS) and the FIRMS FAQ for more information about fires and thermal anomalies detected by the VIIRS instrument aboard the joint NASA/NOAA Suomi-NPP satellite and the MODIS instrument aboard the Terra and Aqua satellites.
