NASA and the EOSDIS Play Key Roles in the 2015 ESIP Winter Meeting
The ESIP Winter Meeting provided a forum for EOSDIS participants to discuss and develop science data systems with more than 200 attendees representing similar organizations.
News date: 01/22/2015
The Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Winter Meeting was held in Washington, DC, January 6 – 8. The more than 200 meeting attendees included about 70 NASA participants, with more than a dozen representatives from NASA’s Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) and Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project along with staff from all of NASA's Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs).
The focus of ESIP’s annual Winter Meeting is generally on high level policy issues relating to Earth science data, and provides a forum to discuss the latest advances in Earth data system development for NASA as well as for ESIP’s more than 130 member organizations.
The theme for the 2015 Winter Meeting was “Earth Science and Data in Support of Food Resilience: Climate, Energy, Water Nexus.” Keynote plenary sessions featured addresses on Leveraging Earth Science Data and Analytics in Food Systems and A Systems Approach to Food Resilience along with panels devoted to User Needs Related to Food Resilience and Enhanced Use of Earth Observation for Societal Benefit.
The EOSDIS and ESDIS Project contributed sessions to the meeting relating to metadata (including the Common Metadata Repository [CMR]), EOSDIS evolving technologies, the NASA Vision 2020 Working Group, the Earth Science Collaboratory, Earth science data analytics, and Earth science data discovery best practices.
ESIP provides a key opportunity for EOSDIS system developers to discuss and develop science data systems with a wide variety of like-minded individuals representing similar organizations. The information gleaned at the ESIP meetings is used to maintain and enhance the EOSDIS infrastructure and components.
