Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) sensors can image the Earth’s surface regardless of cloud conditions or light availability. This makes SAR a valuable tool for mapping surface processes during natural disasters or in areas with persistent coverage by clouds or smoke. In this webinar, we will demonstrate approaches for using SAR datasets in GIS environments to detect landscape change and map flooding events. We will focus on Sentinel-1 datasets, discussing options for generating Radiometric Terrain Corrected (RTC) datasets, and present workflows using both ArcGIS and QGIS software. We will demonstrate how to use the Alaska Satellite Facility Distributed Active Archive Center (ASF DAAC) custom ArcGIS Toolbox to perform geoprocessing tasks, and explain how to achieve the same results using the geoprocessing tools available directly in the ArcGIS and QGIS platforms.
