EOSDIS Data News: May 2018


NASA's Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) published the Global Precipitation Mission Ground Validation (GPM-GV) NASA S-Band Dual-Polarimetric (NPOL) Doppler Radar Wallops Flight Facility dataset which consists of rain rate, reflectivity, Doppler velocity, and other radar measurements obtained from the NPOL Doppler radar positioned at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in support of GPM. NPOL was developed by scientists at Wallops and is a fully transportable and self-contained S-band (10 cm), scanning dual-polarimetric Doppler research radar that was placed near Newark, Maryland in between deployment to GPM GV field campaigns. Data exist for discontinuous time periods ranging from December 6, 2013 thru April 28, 2017. Data files are available in Universal Format (UF), with browse files in PNG format. The browse files contain corrected radar reflectivity, differential reflectivity, specific differential phase, co-polar correlation, and Doppler velocity images. This is a large dataset with files tarred into daily collections zipped for storage and quick download.

GHRC DAAC published the GPM-GV Airborne Snow Observatory (ASO) Olympic Mountains Experiment (OLYMPEX) dataset which contains snow depth, bare Earth surface, land surface classification and a Red, Green, Blue (RGB) composite image. The data are provided at 3 m spatial resolution and are available as part of the GPM-GV OLYMPEX field campaign held in the Pacific Northwest during late 2015 to early 2016. The ASO dataset was collected by a Riegl Q1560 scanning lidar and an ITRES CASI-1500 imaging spectrometer, both part of ASO. The ASO flew during two separate periods, February 8-9, 2016 and March 29-30, 2016, to represent mid-winter and max-snow amounts in the Olympic Mountains. The dataset also contains “no snow” measurements made in September 2014. These bare earth measurements are used to derive snow depth from the Feb/Mar 2016 observations. The data are provided in GeoTIFF format.

GHRC DAAC has also published the GPM-GV Snow Depth Monitoring System OLYMPEX dataset which consists of snow depth, temperature, and relative humidity measurements made during the GPM-GV OLYMPEX held on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. The data were collected using snow depth poles, time lapse cameras, temperature/relative humidity sensors, and manual snow surveys. The analyzed data files are available in netCDF-3 data format. The dataset includes the individual camera photos (JPG images) of snow poles taken every hour during daylight at up to 3 cameras/poles per study site location. A Microsoft Excel data file contains results of a manual snow survey taken at specific locations during the ASO OLYMPEX overflights, which function as validation for the airborne data. In total, measurements contained in this dataset extend from September 5, 2014 through August 20, 2016, but the primary field campaign data were collected during the fall 2015 to spring 2016 OLYMPEX field campaign time period.

GHRC DAAC published the GPM-GV National Mosaic and Multi-Sensor QPE (NMQ) System Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) dataset which contains quality control products, real-time rain rate estimates, hourly precipitation rate estimates, and three-dimensional merged radar reflectivity products. These data products are also referred to as Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor Precipitation Reanalysis for Satellite Validation (MRMS) product and were created using the NOAA NMQ System which ingests Weather Surveillance Radar 88 Doppler (WSR-88D) radar data, Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) model analysis fields, and Hydrometeorological Automated Data Systems (HADS) gauge data. The files provided in this dataset are from the NMQ system output obtained during the GPM IFloodS field campaign that occurred throughout Iowa during April 1, 2013 through June 30, 2013. The data files are available in ASCII, netCDF-4, and binary formats.


Update for IceBridge Sander AIRGrav L1B Geolocated Free Air Gravity Anomalies, Version 1. NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) has published data through 26 November 2017 for the dataset IceBridge Sander AIRGrav L1B Geolocated Free Air Gravity Anomalies, Version 1.

NSIDC DAAC has published Land, Vegetation, and Ice Sensor (LVIS) data collected as part of NASA's Terrestrial Ecology Program campaign, the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE). The datasets contain laser altimetry return energy waveforms and surface elevation over Alaska and Western Canada from 29 June to 17 July 2017.


NASA's Oak Ridge National Laboratory DAAC (ORNL DAAC) published the ABoVE dataset: Hyperspectral Imagery from the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer-Next Generation (AVIRIS-NG) for Alaskan and Canadian Arctic, 2017. This dataset provides Level 1 radiance and Level 2 surface reflectance measured by the AVIRIS-NG instrument during flights over the ABoVE domain between June and August 2017. AVIRIS-NG measures reflected radiance at 5-nanometer (nm) intervals in the visible to shortwave infrared spectral range between 380 and 2510 nm. Measurements are radiometrically and geometrically calibrated and provided at approximately 5-meter spatial resolution. The data include 422 flight lines covering areas of interest to the ABoVE campaign over much of Alaska and western Canada.

NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) released the Historical Urban Population: 3700 BC - AD 2000 dataset on 4 May. The dataset, developed by former UWG member K. Seto of Yale University, provides population estimates for settlements at different points in time across six millennia based on diverse historical data sources.
