EOSDIS Data News - January 2018
NASA's Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) published the NRT and non-quality controlled (NQC) provisional lighting data from the Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) operating on the International Space Station (ISS). LIS (ISS) data are used to detect the distribution and variability of total lightning occurring in the Earth’s tropical and subtropical regions. These data can be used for severe storm detection and analysis, as well as for lightning-atmosphere interaction studies. The LIS instrument makes measurements during both day and night with high detection efficiency in the range of +/- 54 degrees latitude. The four datasets in the collection contain provisional data produced using updated algorithms that provide corrections for false lightning detection and timing issues found. The provisional data replace the LIS (ISS) Beta datasets released previously in August (NRT) and September (NQC) 2017. These provisional data are made available to users until the middle of 2018 when a manual quality control process is complete, at which time the final archive version of LIS (ISS) products will be published. The provisional LIS (ISS) data files are available in both HDF-4 and netCDF-4 formats. Data are available from 3/1/2017 forward.

GHRC DAAC published all seven of the GPM Ground Validation NEXRAD Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) datasets. These datasets contain data from selected NEXRAD instruments in operation during the IPHEx field campaign to help support the ground validation of the GPM. Browse images, in .png format, of base reflectivity from the NEXRAD stations exist for May 1, 2014 through June 12, 2014. Base radar reflectivity is the measure of transmitted power returned to the radar after intercepting a target, for example, rain droplets. This information can illustrate the amount and size distribution of water particles in a given unit volume of atmosphere. These NEXRAD data were downloaded from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) website during the IPHEx field campaign in near-real time.

GHRC DAAC published three Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) NEXRAD Olympic Mountains Ground Validation Experiment (OLYMPEX) datasets. These NEXRAD OLYMPEX datasets contain data from selected NEXRAD instruments in operation during the OLYMPEX field campaign. NEXRAD is a network of 160 stationary S-Band radars dispersed throughout the United States and select locations abroad. Datasets gathered from three of the NEXRAD stations contain browse images of base reflectivity observations in the Portable Network Graphic (.png) format extending from 22 September 2015 through 01 May 2016 during the OLYMPEX field campaign. Base radar reflectivity is the measure of transmitted power returned to the radar after intercepting a target, such as rain droplets.

GHRC DAAC published the GPM Ground Validation Iowa Flood Center (IFC) Stream Flow (IFloodS) dataset. This dataset was obtained from the IFC during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) field campaign that extended from March 31, 2013 through June 30, 2013. The main goal of IFloodS was to evaluate how well the GPM satellite rainfall data can be used for flood forecasting. The IFC monitors stage levels using sensors attached to the side of bridges throughout Iowa. The sensor data were downloaded from the Iowa Flood Information System (IFIS) as support data for the IFloodS campaign. The IFC Stream Flow data were collected in real-time and provide measurements at 15 minute intervals.
NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) has published three HMA 8-meter Digital Elevation Models (DEMs). The DEMs are generated from very-high-resolution imagery from DigitalGlobe satellites during the period of 28 January 2002 to 24 November 2016 and cover the spatial region from Tien Shan and Hindu Kush to Eastern Himalaya. This region contains one of the highest concentrations of snow and glaciers outside of the polar regions, and the advance or retreat of glaciers in this part of the world provides a window into Earth’s changing climate. The new HMA datasets include:

NSIDC DAAC has published new campaign data to the dataset IceBridge CryoSat-2 Level-4 Sea Ice Elevation, Freeboard, and Thickness. Data through 22 October 2017 are now available.
NSIDC DAAC would like to announce a change to data access for the Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Global Record of Daily Landscape Freeze/Thaw Status, Version 4 dataset. Data access is now solely through our primary archive at:
File level spatial and temporal metadata have been added to aid in searching and ordering the data through Earthdata Search.
NSIDC DAAC has published October 2017 data for the dataset MEaSUREs Greenland Image Mosaics from Sentinel-1A and 1B, Version 2. This dataset is part of the Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Program.
NSIDC DAAC has published the dataset MEaSUREs Northern Hemisphere Polar Equal-Area Scalable Earth (EASE) Grid 2.0 Daily 6 km Land Freeze/Thaw Status from Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for Earth Observing Systems (AMSR-E) and AMSR2, Version 1. This dataset, part of the MEaSUREs Program, augments an existing global 25 km resolution dataset, the MEaSUREs Global Record of Daily Landscape Freeze/Thaw Status. It provides daily landscape Freeze/Thaw status at 6 km resolution for the years 2002 to 2016 derived from observations acquired by AMSR-E and AMSR2.
NSIDC DAAC has published a correction to the dataset IceBridge Snow Radar L1B Geolocated Radar Echo Strength Profiles, Version 2 for data collected on 19 May 2016. The error affected the calculation of the elevations of the internal layers, as well as the layer thicknesses for that date only. The data for 19 May 2016 have been reprocessed and replaced with the corrected data.

NASA's Oak Ridge National Laboratory DAAC (ORNL DAAC) published the Vegetation Collection dataset Shrubland Species Cover, Biometric, Carbon and Nitrogen Data, Southern Idaho, 2014. This dataset provides the results of the characterization of shrubland vegetation at two study areas in southern Idaho, USA: the Reynolds Creek Experimental Watershed (RCEW) and Hollister. Data were collected in September and October 2014. Plot measurements include shrub density and biometric data, percent shrub cover derived from line intercept transects, percent plant species and bare ground cover derived from photo analysis, and average LAI.
ORNL DAAC published the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) dataset ABoVE: Wildfire Date of Burning within Fire Scars across Alaska and Canada, 2001-2015. This dataset provides estimates of wildfire progression, as represented by date of burning (DoB), within fire scars across Alaska and Canada for the period 2001-2015. The estimated DoB was derived using an algorithm for identifying the first fire occurrence from the MODIS active fire detection product (MCD14ML, Collection 6) and to determine all dates of burning within fire scars.
ORNL DAAC published the Vegetation Collection dataset PhenoCam Dataset v1.0: Vegetation Phenology from Digital Camera Imagery, 2000-2015. This dataset provides a time series of vegetation phenological observations for 133 sites across diverse ecosystems of North America and Europe from 2000-2015. The phenology data were derived from conventional visible-wavelength automated digital camera imagery collected through the PhenoCam Network at each site. From each acquired image, RGB (red, green, blue) color channel information was extracted and means and other statistics calculated for a region-of-interest (ROI) that delineates an area of specific vegetation type.
ORNL DAAC published the Vegetation Collection dataset PhenoCam Dataset v1.0: Digital Camera Imagery from the PhenoCam Network, 2000-2015. This dataset provides a time series of visible-wavelength digital camera imagery collected through the PhenoCam Network at each of 133 sites in North America and Europe from 2000-2015. The raw imagery was used to derive information on phenology, including time series of vegetation color, canopy greenness, and phenology transition dates for the PhenoCam Dataset v1.0. Note that distribution of the raw imagery is only available upon request.
ORNL DAAC published the North American Carbon Program dataset Sources of Methane Emissions (Vista-LA), South Coast Air Basin (SoCAB), California, USA. This dataset provides spatial data products with identified and classified locations of potential methane (CH4) emitting facilities and infrastructure in the SoCAB. These data products form a GIS-based mapping database designed to address shortcomings in current urban CH4 source inventories and is known as Vista Los Angeles (Vista-LA). Vista-LA spatial datasets were created utilizing an assortment of publicly available data sources from local, state, and federal agencies for the years 2012 to 2017.

NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Application Center (SEDAC) released an update to the Gridded Population of the World, Version 4 (GPWv4) data collection on 22 December. Revision 10 (v4.10) includes a new dataset, Basic Demographic Characteristics, consisting of estimates of human population by age and sex as counts and densities in 2010, as well as updates to all the previously released version 4 datasets.
