EOSDIS Data News - August 2018


NASA's Atmospheric Science Data Center (ASDC), in collaboration with the Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) mission team and the HYGEOS/AERIS/ICARE Data and Services Center, has announced the release of a new Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) Level 3 Stratospheric Aerosol Profile Product (V1.00). The CALIOP Level 3 Stratospheric Aerosol Profile monthly product reports global distributions of 532 nm total attenuated backscatter coefficients, attenuated scattering ratios, aerosol extinction coefficients, and stratospheric aerosol optical depths on a uniform three-dimensional spatial grid (5° latitude × 20° longitude × 900 m vertically). All level 3 parameters are derived from the nighttime CALIPSO version 4 level 1 and level 2 5-km merged layer products and the version 1.x level 2 polar stratospheric cloud data products. The monthly product is available beginning with data from June 13, 2006 through December 31, 2016.


NASA's Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) published the dataset Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Precipitation Radar V06. This dataset is part of a larger effort that will make the legacy TRMM datasets consistent with the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM). Under this effort, TRMM data will become part of the GPM data suite, with GPM algorithms used for reprocessing, and both data format and file naming conventions consistent with those of GPM. Also included are GPM_3HSLH_TRMM, GPM_3HSLH_TRMM_DAY, and GPM_3GSLH_TRMM, which do not have specific digital object identifiers (DOIs) assigned yet.

GES DISC published the Cross-track Infrared Sounder (CrIS) Level 1B data Version 2 data products for both Normal Spectral Resolution (NSR, SNPPCrISL1BNSR) and Full Spectral Resolution (FSR, SNPPCrISL1B).The NSR dataset contains lower resolution data in the shortwave and midwave, compared to the longwave, with a data start date of April 19, 2012. The FSR dataset contains the same spectral resolution in all three bands with a start date of November 2, 2015. Processing of the Level 1B Version 2 included several changes, which are listed in the Level 1B Product User’s Guide. GES DISC, in coordination with the European Space Agency and the Copernicus Sentinel Project, announced the availability of several datasets. They are the Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) Level-1B (L1B) and select Level-2 (L2) data products including UV Aerosol Index (UVAI), Cloud Product, Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), and Carbon Monoxide (CO). NASA's Global Hydrometeorology Resource Center Distributed Active Archive Center (GHRC DAAC) published the GPM Ground Validation (GPM-GV) Composite Satellite Observations Olympic Mountain Experiment (OLYMPEX) dataset. This dataset provides brightness temperature, precipitation, and total column water vapor estimates from multiple satellite observations including Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) F16-19, Global Change Observation Mission - Water 1 (GCOM-W1), GPM, Meteorological Operational satellite (MetOp), NOAA, and joint NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) for the OLYMPEX field campaign. The OLYMPEX field campaign took place between November 2015, and January 2016, with additional ground sampling continuing through February, on the Olympic Peninsula in the Pacific Northwest of the United States. This field campaign provided ground-based validation for the GPM Core Observatory satellite. Satellite Observations data files are available from November 1, 2015 thru May 1, 2016 in HDF-5 format.

GHRC DAAC published the GPM-GV Doppler on Wheels (DOW) OLYMPEX V2 dataset. This dataset was obtained by a dual-polarization and dual-frequency X-band mobile radar operated by the Center for Severe Weather Research (CSWR) during the OLYMPEX campaign. The DOW was deployed in the Chehalis Valley of the Olympic Peninsula, Washington, with the goal of obtaining radar reflectivity and Doppler velocity observations in order to better understand the orographic enhancement of precipitation during frontal passages over mountain ranges. These data are available in the radial RADAR CFradial netCDF-4 format from November 6, 2015 through January 15, 2016. Note that this new version of DOW OLYMPEX data was created to resolve a discrepancy between DOW and the NASA S-Band Dual Polarimetric Doppler radar (NPOL), which was also used in the OLYMPEX field campaign. A new and more appropriate calibration method was determined and the data reprocessed. Version-1 data were retired.

GHRC DAAC published the GPM-GV Reference Rainfall Data Product Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) dataset. This dataset contains hourly rainfall accumulation estimates over central and northeastern Iowa for the period of 1 May to 16 June, 2013. This product is created by combining data from four Next Generation Radar (NEXRAD) ground-based radars located in the IFloodS campaign region. The goals of the IFloodS campaign were to collect detailed measurements of precipitation at the Earth’s surface using ground instruments and advanced weather radars and to simultaneously collect data from satellites passing overhead. The data are available in gzipped ASCII files.


NASA's Land Processes Distributed Active Archive Center (LP DAAC) has re-published the NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Vegetation Continuous Fields (VCF) Yearly Global 0.05 Degree Version 1 data product (VCF5KYR). The data product has been reprocessed to correct errors discovered after the data were initially released. VCF5KYR provides global fractional vegetation cover (FVC) at yearly intervals from 1982 to 2016. FVC is a primary means for measuring global forest cover change. The VCF5KYR data product contains layers for percent of tree cover, non-tree vegetation, and bare ground.

GHRC DAAC has published the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) Statistical Hurricane Intensity Prediction Scheme (SHIPS) Intensity dataset. This dataset was a result of the HS3 field campaign. It consists of data from March 18, 2014 through September 30, 2014. Goals for the HS3 field campaign included assessing the relative roles of large-scale environment and storm-scale internal processes, addressing the controversial role of the Saharan Air Layer (SAL) in tropical storm formation and intensification, and the role of deep convection in the inner-core region of storms. The SHIPS model provides tropical storm intensity forecasts for tropical storms and hurricanes in the Atlantic Ocean and the eastern and central North Pacific Ocean. SHIPS uses Geosynchronous Earth Orbit Satellite (GOES) infrared imagery as input to the processing scheme. These SHIPS data are available in American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) format.

GHRC DAAC added Network Common Data Form (netCDF)-4 format data to the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) on TRMM Science Data and on TRMM LIS Backgrounds data. TRMM LIS detected the distribution and variability of total lightning occurring in the Earth’s tropical and subtropical regions. The LIS Science Data consists of lightning and lightning density measurements for severe storm detection and analysis, as well as for lightning-atmosphere interaction studies. The LIS instrument made measurements during both day and night with high detection efficiency. These data are now available in both Hierarchical Data Format (HDF)-4 and netCDF-4 formats, with corresponding browse images in GIF format. The TRMM satellite stopped collecting data on April 8, 2015 and crashed in the Indian Ocean on June 15, 2015. Note that this dataset does not currently contain uniform algorithm processing over the length of operation. There are plans to reprocess the entire dataset in the future with an updated algorithm:


NASA's National Snow and Ice Data Center DAAC (NSIDC DAAC) published the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E)/AMSR2 Unified Level 3 daily 6.25 km polar gridded 89 GHz brightness temperature dataset. This dataset uses the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency AMSR2 Level-1R input brightness temperatures that are calibrated (unified) across the AMSR-E and AMSR2 Level-1R products. Data are mapped to a polar stereographic grid at 6.25 km spatial resolution and are available from 2 July 2012 through the present.

NSIDC DAAC published data through December 2017 for the dataset Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Greenland Ice Velocity: Selected Glacier Site Velocity Maps from InSAR, Version 1. This dataset, part of the MEaSUREs Program, provides velocity estimates determined from Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) data for major glacier outlet areas in Greenland beginning 1 January 2009. The InSAR Selected Glacier Site Velocity Maps are produced from the German Aerospace Center’s TerraSAR-X/TanDEM-X (TSX/TDX) image pairs.

NSIDC DAAC has published an update to the dataset IceBridge ATM L4 Surface Elevation Rate of Change to include measurement comparisons of 2017 data to earlier years over Greenland. This dataset contains surface elevation rate of change measurements derived from IceBridge and Pre-IceBridge Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) wide scan elevation measurements data (ILATM1B) for missions flown under NASA’s Operation IceBridge and Arctic Ice Mapping projects.

The IceBridge-Related Sander AIRGrav L1B Geolocated Free Air Gravity Anomalies dataset is now available at NSIDC DAAC from 29 April 2012 to 31 December 2016. This dataset contains Greenland and Antarctica gravity measurements taken from the Sander Geophysics AIRGrav airborne gravity system. These data are being made available as an early release with minimal documentation currently available. An increased Level of Service and more detailed documentation will be available in the future.

The Aquarius L3 Weekly Polar-Gridded Landscape Freeze/Thaw Data, Version 5 dataset is now available from NSIDC DAAC. This Level 3 (L3) dataset includes weekly Northern Hemisphere landscape freeze/thaw (FT) data derived from L-band radiometer brightness temperature observations, acquired by the Aquarius sensor aboard Argentina’s Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas (SAC-D) satellite. The data are distributed on the Equal-Area Scalable Earth Grid Version 2.0 (EASE-Grid 2.0), with a spatial resolution of 36 km. The SAC-D satellite was developed collaboratively between NASA and Argentina’s space agency, Comisión Nacional de Actividades Espaciales (CONAE).


NASA's Oak Ridge National Laboratory DAAC (ORNL DAAC) revised the North American Carbon Program (NACP) dataset NACP Multi-scale Synthesis and Terrestrial Model Intercomparison Project (MsTMIP): Global 0.5-degree Model Outputs in Standard Format, Version 1.0.This dataset provides global gridded estimates of carbon, energy, and hydrologic fluxes between the land and atmosphere from 15 Terrestrial Biosphere Models (TBMs) in a standard format. Model estimates are at monthly and yearly time steps for the period 1900 to 2010, with a spatial resolution of 0.5 degree x 0.5 degree globally, excluding Antarctica.

ORNL DAAC published “Observed and GEOS-5 Simulated CO Concentrations with Tagged Tracers for ATom-1”. The manuscript DOI in support of Strobe et al is at: doi:10.3334/ORNLDAAC/1604. Also, documentation and reviews are in progress for two additional Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom) manuscript datasets.

ORNL DAAC published the Earth Venture Suborbital-2 (EVS-2) Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom) dataset ATom: Simulated Data Stream for Modeling ATom-like Measurements. This dataset provides a simulated data stream representative of an ATom data collection flight and also modeled reactivities for ozone (O3) production and loss and methane (CH4) loss from six global atmospheric chemistry models. The simulated data include concentrations of selected atmospheric trace gases for 14,880 air parcels along a simulated north-south ATom flight path along 180-degrees longitude over the Pacific basin. Each of the six models produced ozone production and loss and methane loss reactivities initialized using the simulated data beginning with five different days in August (8-01, 8-06, 8-11, 8-16, 8-21). Modeled years for each individual model varied from 1997 to 2016.

ORNL DAAC revised the ORNL DAAC Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Subsets dataset MODIS and Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Land Product Subsets RESTful Web Service. The MODIS/VIIRS Web Service provides data access capabilities for several MODIS Collection 6 and VIIRS (Version 001) land products. The web service provides data access functions for users to execute on their local computing resources. The web service is built upon the ORNL DAAC's MODIS/VIIRS Global Subsetting and Visualization Tool that provides customized subsets and visualization of land products for any land location on earth. With the web service users can retrieve land product subsets through command line operations; download and integrate subsets directly into client-side workflows; download and visualize subsets with customized code; and download subsets and write custom code for data reformatting.

ORNL DAAC revised the ORNL DAAC MODIS Subsets dataset MODIS and VIIRS Land Products Fixed Sites Subsetting and Visualization Tool. The MODIS/VIIRS Fixed Sites Subsetting Tool provides customized subsets and visualizations of several MODIS Collection 6 and VIIRS (Version 001) land products for 2000+ selected field and flux tower sites around the world. Spatial subsets of the land products are available for predefined areas (approximately 8.5 by 8.5-km) centered on each site. Users select a site and data product through the graphical web interface and are directed to a page with options for data download and visualizations.

ORNL DAAC revised the ORNL DAAC MODIS Subsets dataset MODIS and VIIRS Land Products Global Subsetting and Visualization Tool. The MODIS/VIIRS Global Subsetting and Visualization Tool provides on-demand, customized subsets of several MODIS Collection 6 and VIIRS (Version 001) land products. Data are available to the user through an interactive web page. The user specifies data product of interest and the area of interest by entering geographic coordinates or selecting the location on a map. Data are provided in either the native sinusoidal or geographic (WGS84) projection. Subsets are processed and delivered to the user via email. To view and download the data order, a user is provided with a custom order visualization page with interactive time series plots, data quality information, land cover and phenology data, order and product citations, and download access for the data in tabular and spatial data formats.

ORNL DAAC published the Arctic-Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) dataset ABoVE: Dall Sheep Response to Snow and Landscape Covariates, Alaska, 2005-2008. This dataset provides daily estimates of snow depth and snow density for the study area in Lake Clark National Park and Preserve, Alaska. The data were generated using SnowModel and used as snow covariates along with landscape covariates in modeling efforts to study Dall sheep movements in response to dynamic snow conditions. Thirty adult Dall sheep (12 male, 18 female) were captured and outfitted with global positioning system (GPS) collars programmed to acquire locations every seven hours. Given the individual sheep locations, their distances to land cover (e.g., shrub, forest, glacier), landscape characteristics (e.g., elevation, terrain ruggedness index (TRI), vector ruggedness measure (VRM), slope, and aspect), snow depth and density, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) normalized difference snow index (NDSI), and other covariates were determined and are provided in the environmental data file. The snow density and depth data are provided at 25-m, 100-m, 500-m, 2000-m, and 10000-m grid resolutions, at 1-day increments, and cover the period September 1, 2005 through August 31, 2008. The sheep, snow, and landscape data cover the years 2006, 2007, and 2008.

ORNL DAAC revised the ATom dataset ATom: Merged Atmospheric Chemistry, Trace Gases, and Aerosols. This dataset provides information on greenhouse gases and human-produced air pollution, including atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), tropospheric ozone (O3) and black carbon (BC) aerosols, collected during airborne campaigns conducted by NASA's ATom mission. This dataset includes merged data from all instruments. A variety of merged file types have been created for each flight date. The merge files include additional data such as numbered profiles and distance flown. In the case of data obtained over longer time intervals (e.g. flask data), the merge files provide (weighted) averages of 1-second data to match the sampling intervals. ATom deploys an extensive gas and aerosol payload on NASA's DC-8 aircraft for systematic, global-scale sampling of the atmosphere, profiling continuously from 0.2 to 12 km altitude. Flights occurred in each of 4 seasons from 2016 to 2018. Flights originate from NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center in Palmdale, California, fly north to the western Arctic, south to the South Pacific, east to the Atlantic, north to Greenland, and return to California across central North America. ATom establishes a single, contiguous, global-scale dataset. This comprehensive dataset will be used to improve the representation of chemically reactive gases and short-lived climate forcers in global models of atmospheric chemistry and climate. Profiles of the reactive gases will also provide critical information for validation of satellite data, particularly in remote areas where in situ data is lacking. Complete aircraft flight information including, but not limited to, latitude, longitude, and altitude are also provided. This data release provides results from the ATom-1 and ATom-2 flight campaigns. Data from subsequent campaigns will be added when it is finalized.


NASA's Physical Oceanography DAAC (PO.DAAC) published the Aquarius/Satélite de Aplicaciones Científicas-D (SAC-D) version 5.0 Level 4 optimally interpolated sea surface salinity dataset. The product covers the entire duration of the Aquarius/SAC-D mission 8/26/2011 to 6/7/2015 and is a 7-day 0.5 degree spatial resolution, near-global coverage dataset. The optimal interpolation (OI) mapping procedure used to create this product corrects for systematic spatial biases in Aquarius sea surface salinity (SSS) data with respect to in-situ near-surface salinity observations and takes into account available statistical information about the signal and noise, specific to the Aquarius instrument.

PO.DAAC ingested the latest Making Earth System data records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) updates for the Integrated Multi-Mission Ocean Altimeter Data for Climate Research Version 4.2 dataset (Cycles 942 - 946) from B. Beckley. This update covers the period from April 10, 2018 to May 30, 2018.


NASA's Socioeconomic Data and Application Center (SEDAC) completed a production release of the Natural Resource Protection and Child Health Indicators (NRPI), 2017 Release dataset. The NRPI covers 234 countries and is calculated based on the weighted average percentage of biomes under protected status. The CHI is a composite index for 199 countries derived from the average of three proximity-to-target scores for access to at least basic water and sanitation, along with child mortality. The NRPI and CHI are part of a set of indicators used by the Millennium Challenge Corporation in its decisions about development assistance. The Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Sounder Science Team and GES DISC released the Advanced Technology Microwave Sounder (ATMS) Level 1B data, Version 2. The three window channels of the ATMS at 23.8, 31.4, and 89 GHz provide information to compute total precipitable water, precipitation, information about cloud liquid water, sea-ice concentration, and snow cover. The window channel at 183 GHz channel is used to retrieve atmospheric humidity profiles. Processing of the Level 1B Version 2 included several changes, including modifications to geolocation, which are listed in the Level 1B Data Products user’s guide.
