EOSDIS Data News - 8/11/2017


The Global Hydrology Resource Center (GHRC) Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) has publlished two additional datasets from the Global Precipitation Management (GPM) Ground Validation (GV) program. "GPM Ground Validation Duke Microwave Radiometer (MWR) IPHEx" data were collected by the MWR, which is a sensitive microwave radiometer that detects the microwave radiance at two frequencies: 23.8 and 31.4 GHz. The measurements are are used to determine the presence of vapor and liquid water molecules in the atmosphere along with other derived parameters. These data were obtained during the Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) field experiment, which was held in North Carolina with the goal to characterize warm season orthographic precipitation regimes and the relationship between precipitation regimes and hydrologic processes in regions of complex terrain. These data are available for May 1, 2014 through June 15, 2014 and are in netCDF-3 format.

“GPM Ground Validation Iowa Flood Center (IFC) Rain Gauges IFloodS” data were collected during the Iowa Flood Studies (IFloodS) campaign from April 28 through May 20, 2013 near Shueyville City, Iowa. Four observation sites, each consisting of three tipping bucket rain gauges, collected 5-minute accumulations of precipitation data. The main goal of IFloodS was to evaluate how well the GPM satellite rainfall data can be used for flood forecasting. Specifically, this meant collecting detailed measurements of precipitation at the Earth’s surface using ground instruments and advanced weather radars while simultaneously collecting data from satellites passing overhead.
The Land Processes DAAC (LP DAAC) has recently released the first product suite available in the NASA Making Earth System Data Records for Use in Research Environments (MEaSUREs) Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity (LSTE) collection. The Combined ASTER and MODIS Emissivity database over Land (CAMEL) product suite provides global data records of Emissivity, Uncertainty and Principal Components Analysis (PCA) Coefficients at 5 kilometer resolution on a monthly basis for years 2003 to 2015.
LPDAAC has also released the Version 6 Terra and Aqua MODIS Net Evapotranspiration data products. The four data products provide global annual and 8-day composite information at 500 meter resolution.

The MEaSUREs Greenland Image Mosaics from Sentinel-1A and -1B, Version 2 data set, available at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) DAAC, has been updated with mosaics through 30 June 2017. This data set, part of the MEaSUREs Program, provides 6- and 12-day 50 m resolution image mosaics of the Greenland coastline and ice sheet periphery.
On August 1, 2017, the binary version of Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation (ICESat) Geoscience Laser Alimeter System (GLAS) data were retired from public distribution. All GLAS data continue to be available to users in Hierarchical Data Format 5 (HDF5) format.
