Welcome to the Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Software Reuse Working Group (WG) portal web site. Please visit the ESDS Working Group Page for some additional information about our group.

We have updated our reuse definitions including what the Working Group does and does not consider reuse in our Resources, Library section, and posted a brochure about our group and its activities. The reuse material used at our 2010 annual meeting is now available in the 9th ESDS WG Meeting folder under Resources, Library. Our Software Packaging for Reuse v1.0 document has just been released under Resources, Guidelines, and our Reuse Readiness Levels (RRLs) section now includes the RRL v1.0 document, as well as other RRL material. A number of bottom-up reuse guidelines, a technology transfer guideline, and a technology transfer FAQ to help explain NASA's technology transfer process are available in the Resources, Guideline Documents section. We now have a section for technical reports produced by members of the WG, and tech report templates are available for creating your own tech report. Some of our more recent publications added to the Resources, Library, Publications section include our 2010 IGARSS paper on reuse of software assets for the decadal survey missions and our 2010 IRI paper on the WG's progress towards a NASA Reuse Enablement System. Recent presentations added to the Resources, Library, Presentations section include our 2011 ESIP Winter Meeting poster on software packaging to improve the impact of Earth science information, 2010 AGU Fall Meeting poster on packaging software assets for reuse, 2010 ESIP Summer Meeting poster on reuse tools to help enable climate research, 2010 IGARSS poster on reuse of software assets for the decadal survey missions, 2010 ESSI Workshop presentation on tools for reusing Earth science software, and 2010 IRI presentation on progress towards a NASA RES. Our full list of upcoming events is also in the Resources section, as is our list of some awards that are relevant to reuse projects, including the peer-recognition award developed by the WG (the nomination form is also available separately).

We have completed our survey to better understand the practice of software reuse within the Earth Science community. Preliminary survey findings are available on the web and have been published in a 2006 IGARSS paper. We have also posted some of our documents related to our proposed Reuse Enablement System (RES) in a new folder under the Resources section. Currently available documents include: a trade study of existing systems, use cases for the proposed RES, requirements for the proposed RES, an architecture study of existing software/system solutions, a test plan for the proposed RES, and a set of policies for the operation and maintenance of the proposed RES.
