Heritage Lightning Imaging Sensor (LIS) processing code was modified so that it can be used operationally for the future GOES-R Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM). Since LIS is a low Earth orbit sensor, many effects had to be considered in order to modify the code for use with a geostationary satellite, and modifications were necessary for handling multiple types of satellite lightning data. The GLM algorithm was rigorously tested and meets all NOAA operational coding standards and ancillary requirements. The final version 5.0 algorithm has been submitted to the Algorithm Integration Team. Reuse of the LIS code allowed one key developer to confidently "write" the GKM Level 2 code under an accelerated delivery schedule and to deliver working Level 5 code on time and within budget. Also, the GLM package will be the basis of the lightning algorithm for the new Lightning Imager instrument on the Meteostat Third Generation satellite series.
